Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At Lawrence House School, we believe that every child and young person has the right to feel safe, valued, respected and proud of who they are. We are committed to creating a school community where everyone belongs, individuality is celebrated and every member of our community is treated with dignity, kindness and compassion.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. They underpin our curriculum, our pastoral support, our relationships and the wider culture of our school. We believe that helping young people to understand, appreciate and respect difference prepares them not only for success in school, but for life in modern Britain.

We actively promote equality of opportunity, challenge discrimination and foster positive relationships across our school community in line with the Equality Act 2010. Through our curriculum, personal development programme, assemblies, enrichment opportunities and everyday interactions, students develop an understanding of the Protected Characteristics and learn that every individual deserves to be treated fairly and with respect, regardless of their background, identity or circumstances.

Students learn about the Protected Characteristics identified within the Equality Act 2010, including:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

Learning is delivered in an age-appropriate, sensitive and respectful manner, encouraging students to recognise and challenge prejudice, celebrate diversity and develop empathy, confidence and respect for others.

As part of our wider personal development curriculum, we also actively promote the Fundamental British Values of:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

These values are embedded throughout school life and help students become responsible, respectful and active citizens. We encourage our young people to think critically, express their views appropriately, listen to others respectfully and appreciate that people may hold different beliefs, opinions and life experiences.

Our curriculum reflects the diverse society in which we live and provides positive, non-stereotypical representation of different communities, families and identities, including LGBTQ+ people. Through Relationships Education, PSHCE, assemblies, literature, enrichment activities and everyday school experiences, students develop the knowledge and understanding needed to build respectful relationships and contribute positively to an inclusive society.

Throughout the year, students also take part in a range of events and activities that celebrate diversity, promote inclusion and encourage respectful discussion. One of these is our annual Lawrence House School Pride Event, where students, staff and the community come together to celebrate individuality, allyship and the message that everyone deserves to feel accepted, safe and valued. The event provides opportunities for learning, creativity, student voice and community participation, reinforcing our commitment to creating a culture where everyone belongs. If you would like to sponsor or attend our event, please contact: phil.davies@qpconline.co.uk.

At Lawrence House School, inclusion is not limited to lessons or special events. It is reflected in the way we build relationships, support wellbeing, celebrate achievement and ensure every child is seen, heard and respected for who they are. By embedding equality, diversity and inclusion into everyday school life, we help our students develop the confidence, empathy and understanding they need to thrive in school and beyond.

Celebrating LGBTQ+ Inclusion

Creating an environment where LGBTQ+ young people feel safe, respected and represented forms an important part of our wider commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. We are proud to align our practice with the principles of the Liverpool GYRO manifesto for LGBTQ+ young people in schools, Teach the Teachers, which promotes inclusive education, understanding and support for LGBTQ+ students.

We are delighted that our work has been recognised through the Bronze – Centre for LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Education Award, awarded by the Centre for LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Education at Leeds Beckett University’s Carnegie School of Education.

This prestigious national quality mark recognises schools that demonstrate a research-informed and sustained commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion. It reflects our work in developing an inclusive curriculum, providing high-quality staff training, creating a welcoming physical environment, listening to student voice and working in partnership with families and the wider community. It also supports our ongoing commitment to fulfilling the Public Sector Equality Duty under the Equality Act 2010.

Our annual Pride celebration is just one of the many ways we celebrate diversity and promote a culture of belonging, ensuring that every member of our school community knows they are valued, respected and accepted for who they are.

The award followed a rigorous assessment across eight key areas:

  • Leadership and Development
  • Governance
  • Professional Learning and Development
  • Curriculum
  • The Physical Environment
  • The Emotional Environment and Promoting Wellbeing
  • Working in Partnership with Students
  • Working in Partnership with Parents, Carers and Community Organisations

Assessors recognised the strength of our inclusive culture, commenting:

“Equality and diversity are a core part of the school’s culture and part of their agenda.”

“Staff are trained in this area and adopt a ‘ready, not reactive’ approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion.”

“The physical environment is something that stands out as an example of how the school is committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion.”

“The use of resources as part of introducing LGBTQ+ identities across the curriculum, beyond Relationships and Sex Education, is excellent. Lawrence House School should be proud of the way it normalises LGBTQ+ identities.”

“The team should be incredibly proud of their work in this area; they truly believe in LGBTQ+ inclusion, and this is clear across the school.”

We are proud of this external recognition, but even more proud of the inclusive culture it represents. Equality, diversity and inclusion are not initiatives at Lawrence House School, they are part of who we are. We remain committed to ensuring that every child and young person feels a genuine sense of belonging and leaves our school equipped with the knowledge, understanding and values needed to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing society.
