British Values at Lawrence House School

BV

Our Commitment

At Lawrence House School, we are dedicated to promoting fundamental British values as part of our students’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development. We believe these values underpin a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment where every student can thrive.

The Department for Education (DfE) defines fundamental British values as:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

We recognise that our students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Our approach is inclusive, ensuring that every member of our community understands and lives these values in a meaningful way.

How We Promote British Values

Democracy

  • Students are encouraged to share their views and have a voice through regular school council meetings and feedback sessions.
  • We support decision-making in the classroom by offering choices and encouraging discussion, helping students understand how their voice matters.
  • We hold mock elections and encourage voting to teach the importance of democracy.

The Rule of Law

  • We have clear school rules that are consistently reinforced in all settings.
  • Students learn the reasons behind rules and laws, their responsibilities, and the consequences when rules are broken.
  • Visits from local law enforcement and community officers help students understand the role of laws in society.

Individual Liberty

  • We foster a safe and supportive environment where students are encouraged to make independent choices and express themselves confidently.
  • Students are taught about personal rights and freedoms, and how to exercise these safely.
  • Our curriculum supports understanding of e-safety, self-advocacy, and personal responsibility.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

  • We celebrate diversity through assemblies, curriculum topics, and cultural events.
  • Students learn about different faiths and beliefs through PSHCE lessons, visits to places of worship, and guest speakers.
  • We promote respect for all, with a strong focus on kindness, empathy, and understanding.

Embedding British Values in Our Curriculum

We ensure British values are woven throughout our curriculum and wider school life, including some examples, but not limited to:

  • English: Exploring literature and stories from a range of cultures and perspectives, encouraging discussion about respect, tolerance, and democracy.
  • Humanities: Studying events that have shaped British society and values.
  • PSHCE: Learning about different faiths, beliefs, and cultures, and discussing topics such as rights, responsibilities, and equality.
  • Assemblies: Weekly assemblies focus on themes such as respect, tolerance, and understanding differences.

Involving Our School Community

We work in partnership with parents, carers, and the wider community to promote British values. We regularly review our approach, seeking input from all stakeholders to ensure our provision remains relevant and impactful.

Our Ethos

At Lawrence House School, we aim to develop responsible, respectful citizens who are well-prepared for life in modern Britain. We take a supportive, inclusive approach, ensuring British values are lived, not just taught.
